STAP Structural Engineering Ltd - Expert Structural Engineers in London, Kent, and Surrounding Regions for Commercial and Residential Projects

With an abundance of knowledge and skill within the industry, STAP Structural Engineering is one of the leading companies to work with foundation design in London.

We offer a service to both residential and commercial developments. Foundation design can take many different forms. The foundation is the part of the building that is below ground level and the purpose is to transfer loads from construction that is above ground. Excavating the ground is to the required depth to ensure that the structure is stable. The foundation depth is the distance from the lowest point of the foundation construction to the ground level.

When completing any type of foundation design in London, there are some key factors to consider before the design process takes place, STAP Structural Engineering will analyse the ground type, whether its clay, silt, gravel, loam soil or hard rock, it is a factor that needs to be considered. We also would need to evaluate the actual load that the foundations will exert on the ground, following this we will analyse the existence of axial loads and bending moments, the bending moment is a measure of the bending effect that can materialize when an external force is applied to a structure. Most importantly, the site and geographical terrain will be analysed to ensure that the conditions, landforms and contours are secure and will have no negative influence on the type of foundation.

There are two types of foundations

Deep Foundations

If the depth of a footing is greater than the width, then it is known as a deep foundation. This style of foundation is typically used where the bearing capacity of soil is incredibly low. There are three types of deep foundations, pile foundation, which is a type of foundation that which the load is transmitted by a vertical member. The vertical member is typically known as a pile, which is usually made with steel, wood or concrete. Secondly, there is a pier foundation, this is a vertical column that has a larger cross-section than the pile foundation would have. The pier is installed by excavating a cylindrical hole and installed in a dry area. Finally, a good foundation is a type of foundation which is typically provided below the water level and usually used for bridges and similar infrastructures.

Shallow Foundations

Shallow foundations are typically called footings but they are situated below the lowest part of the structure. When a structure is being built the first part to be constructed is the footings. The ground will be excavated and the shallow foundations will be laid, the depth of a shallow foundation is when it is less than its width. Shallow foundations are usually relatively easy to construct and as long as a careful investigation is undertaken of the foundation site so ensure that a detailed foundation design is drawn up. There are a few different types of shallow foundations, spread or isolated footings which are used to support an individual column and are typically circular, rectangular or square slabs to spread the load over the area. A Strip foundation is another type of shallow foundation, this provides a continuous strip to support a linear structure.  Mat or raft foundations are formed of reinforced concrete slabs that cover a wide surface typically wide enough to cover the entire footprint of a structure. Finally, a combined foundation is a shallow foundation that has two or three columns that are located incredibly close to one another and provide stability to a single substructure.
